The HMPV virus, which has recently surged in China and challenged hospitals, is a common respiratory illness. According to doctors in the UAE, there is no need to be concerned about it. This virus, identified in 2001 in the Netherlands, is similar to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and can affect both the upper and lower respiratory tracts.
Dr. Suhair Sainalabdeen, a pulmonologist at Mediclinic Hospital in Dubai, explained that HMPV typically causes mild symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, runny nose, sore throat, and fever. These symptoms resemble those of the common cold, and most people contract this virus during childhood.
Dr. Jyothish George from Prime Healthcare Group also added that symptoms of this virus may be more severe in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. However, in most cases, patients recover without the need for hospitalization.
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, and treatment mainly involves managing symptoms at home. If high fever or breathing difficulties occur, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
Experts advise UAE residents to follow preventive measures, such as frequent handwashing, covering the mouth and nose when coughing, wearing a mask when sick, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals, to reduce the risk of contracting this virus.
