The exhibition “Rumi: 750 Years of Absence… Eight Centuries of Presence” is being held at the House of Wisdom cultural center in Sharjah until February 14. Featuring rare manuscripts and handwritten works, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the life and spiritual transformations of Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi (Rumi).
This event marks the 750th anniversary of Rumi’s passing and is divided into two main sections: “Beginnings” and “Transformation.” The “Beginnings” section introduces visitors to Rumi’s birthplace in Balkh, his migration to Konya, and the intellectual and cultural influences that shaped his philosophy. The “Transformation” section explores his profound encounter with Shams Tabrizi and the resulting spiritual evolution.
Marwa Al Aqroubi, Executive Director of the House of Wisdom, spoke to Gulf News about Rumi’s lasting influence:
“Rumi’s wisdom transcends time and continues to resonate across generations. His universal themes of love, unity, and human connection have crossed borders. Through this exhibition, we aim to present a new perspective on his life and works.”
The exhibition showcases valuable Rumi-related artifacts, including:
Exquisite pages from the Divan-e Kabir, containing over 35,000 verses of poetry.
Rare manuscripts of Maqalat-e Shams Tabrizi from the Rumi Museum in Konya.
Two precious copies of the Masnavi from the private collection of Abdulrahman Al Owais.
Unique manuscripts from the House of Manuscripts archive in Sharjah, adorned with geometric and botanical motifs, reflecting the Masnavi’s esteemed status among kings and rulers of its time.
The “Transformation” section focuses on the period after Rumi’s pilgrimage in 642 AH when he met Shams Tabrizi. This meeting profoundly changed his life, leading him to withdraw from teaching for nearly two years to engage in spiritual reflection and discourse with Shams. It was during this time that Rumi laid the foundation for his timeless works and underwent a significant shift in his perception of divine wisdom.
The exhibition “Rumi: 750 Years of Absence… Eight Centuries of Presence” runs until February 14 at the House of Wisdom in Sharjah. Organizers hope that by presenting rare historical documents and artifacts, they can offer a fresh global perspective on Rumi’s life and teachings.
