Start of Ramadan
This year, Ramadan in the UAE is expected to begin on March 1. However, the official start date will be confirmed by the Moon Sighting Committee after sunset on February 28.
Prohibition of Eating, Drinking, and Smoking in Public
Although most restaurants and cafes remain open, non-Muslims should refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, or even chewing gum in public spaces.
These actions are officially prohibited and may result in a fine of up to AED 2,000 (USD 545) or imprisonment for up to one month, though such penalties are rarely enforced.
Key considerations:
Non-fasting individuals can eat and drink in designated areas such as inside restaurants and cafes.
Workplaces must provide a separate space for non-fasting employees to eat.
Drinking water is allowed in gyms and private beaches.
Eating, drinking, and smoking inside a car is allowed, provided it is not visible from outside.
Children are allowed to eat and drink in public without restrictions.
If you accidentally eat or drink in public and someone points it out, it is best to apologize.
Respecting Those Who Are Fasting
Avoid excessive displays of affection in public.
Refrain from making loud noises in public places.
Both men and women are encouraged to dress more modestly during the holy month. However, swimwear is still acceptable at public beaches and hotel pools.
Non-Muslims should be mindful of their language and avoid using harsh words or making inappropriate jokes around fasting individuals.
Playing loud music is discouraged during Ramadan. It is recommended to use headphones, especially during prayer times or the call to prayer.
Participating in Ramadan Activities
Even if you are not Muslim or fasting, you can still experience the Ramadan atmosphere by attending Iftar and Suhoor tents at hotels and taking part in charitable initiatives.
If invited to an Iftar gathering, it is polite to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before Maghrib prayer.
Watching the Iftar cannon fire, which marks sunset in some areas, can be an enjoyable experience, especially for children.
