This winter, Abu Dhabi will unveil its latest cultural landmark — the Zayed National Museum, dedicated to the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. The museum will officially open its doors to the public on December 3 in the Saadiyat Cultural District.
The museum takes visitors on a remarkable journey through 300,000 years of history, tracing the story of the UAE from its ancient past to the modern nation it is today.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, described the museum as “a reflection of Sheikh Zayed’s vision and values — a place where dialogue, learning, and exchange flourish, allowing visitors to connect with the nation’s journey from its deep roots to its aspirations for the future.”
What Awaits Visitors at the Zayed National Museum
1. Architectural Marvel Inspired by Falcon Wings
Designed by the renowned firm Foster + Partners, the museum’s structure draws inspiration from the wings of a falcon in flight. The design blends modern technology with traditional sustainable techniques, creating a building that is both environmentally responsible and deeply rooted in regional culture.
2. Six Permanent Galleries Telling the UAE’s Story
The museum features six main galleries, each offering a unique perspective on the nation’s history. Out of more than 3,000 artifacts, around 1,500 will be on display at any given time, including a 300,000-year-old stone tool discovered at Jebel Hafeet.
The galleries explore themes such as:
Our Beginnings – The legacy and values of Sheikh Zayed
Our Ancestors – Early human activity in the region
Our Connections – The impact of trade, Islam, and technology
Our Shores – Ancient industries such as pearl diving
Our Roots – Traditional Emirati customs and lifestyles
Al Masar Garden – An outdoor gallery showcasing native plants that inspired Sheikh Zayed’s passion for nature

The Zayed National Museum is designed as a space for interaction and inspiration. Throughout the year, it will host workshops, live performances, film screenings, and cultural events, creating an immersive visitor experience.
