Dubai is on the brink of another major revolution in urban transportation. According to Omar Sultan Al Olama, the UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Elon Musk’s The Boring Company will launch its first Middle Eastern project in Dubai, with the first phase of the “Dubai Loop” expected to become operational by the second quarter of 2026.
Developed in collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), this ambitious project will create an underground tunnel network designed to reduce traffic congestion, connect key areas of the city, and offer a transport solution resilient to extreme weather conditions.
The initial phase will span 17 kilometers and include 11 underground stations, designed to transport up to 20,000 passengers per hour through some of the city’s busiest zones.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, described the project as a testament to Dubai’s commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable mobility solutions.
Elon Musk, founder of The Boring Company, has compared the Loop system to “a wormhole journey,” emphasizing its safety and environmental advantages. He argues that tunnels are the safest places during earthquakes and remain unaffected by sandstorms or severe weather, unlike surface roads. Musk believes that solving urban traffic requires vertical expansion of transportation—whether through aerial routes or underground tunnels.
The Dubai Loop is modeled after the successful Las Vegas Convention Center Loop, where Tesla vehicles transport passengers through underground passages. The Dubai version is expected to feature higher capacity, potential autonomous driving capabilities, and a fully integrated digital ticketing system.
This project is part of Dubai’s long-term smart mobility vision, which also includes flying taxis and autonomous transport systems, aiming to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population that has recently surpassed four million residents
