By a decree issued by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the National Anti-Narcotics Authority has been established as an independent federal entity under the Cabinet. This new authority replaces the General Department of Anti-Narcotics within the Ministry of Interior.
The authority is chaired by Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan.
According to the official statement, the new body aims to strengthen the national framework for combating drug-related crimes, unify federal and local efforts, and safeguard public health and security.
Key responsibilities include:
Identifying and dismantling drug trafficking and distribution networks
Coordinating with security and judicial authorities to enforce justice
Developing and updating anti-narcotics laws and strategies
Monitoring emerging patterns of drug-related crimes
Supervising medical and pharmaceutical institutions to prevent illegal sales
Supporting addiction treatment and rehabilitation programs
Conducting scientific research on addiction and promoting public awareness
Collaborating internationally to exchange intelligence and strengthen regional and global security
