As UAE residents spend a significant amount of time on the road, staying informed about new speed regulations is essential to avoid fines and black points. In 2025, authorities have introduced changes to the speed limits on several key routes to improve road safety and ensure smoother traffic flow. These changes also include adjustments to minimum speed limits in fast lanes—welcome news for many drivers.
Minimum Speed Limit Removed on E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road)
As of April 14, the minimum speed limit of 120 km/h in the left lane of this highway has been officially removed. Previously, drivers traveling below this speed faced a fine of AED 400. The update aims to facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles and trucks. The maximum speed limit remains unchanged at 140 km/h.
Speed Limit Reduced on Abu Dhabi – Sweihan Road (Road 20)
Effective April 14, the speed limit on this route has been reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h. This road is also known as a key access route to Abu Dhabi International Airport, making it crucial for drivers to take note of the updated limit to avoid penalties.
Speed Limit Reduced on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11)
Starting April 14, the speed limit on this major highway has been lowered from 160 km/h to 140 km/h. E11 is the longest road in the UAE, connecting Abu Dhabi with Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah. In Dubai, it is commonly referred to as Sheikh Zayed Road.
Speed Limit Reduced in Ras Al Khaimah
Since January 17, the speed limit on a section of Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem Road—from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roundabout (Al Refaa) to Al Marjan Island Roundabout—has been reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h. Radar thresholds have also been adjusted from 121 km/h to 101 km/h. The change is aimed at reducing accidents caused by speeding.
Reminder: These updates are part of the UAE’s efforts to enhance road safety. Drivers are urged to follow the new limits to avoid fines and maintain their traffic records
