For the first time in the UAE, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has successfully performed a complex penile implant (neophallus) surgery on a young man with a congenital condition resulting in a penile length of less than one centimeter. The multi-stage procedure involved advanced microvascular, plastic, and urological surgery, including grafting skin from the patient’s forearm and implanting a rigid prosthesis.
The patient fully recovered within six to eight weeks. Dr. Omar Rahim, a urology specialist at the clinic, explained that this technique can also help men who have lost their genitals due to cancer, trauma, or advanced vascular diseases.
In addition to the penile implant, artificial testicles were placed to achieve a natural appearance and feel, though the procedure does not restore fertility. This marks a major step forward in reconstructive surgery, eliminating the need for regional patients to travel abroad for such treatments.
