Several passengers on Emirates flight EK086 from Zurich to Dubai faced a difficult night at Zurich Airport after the flight was delayed due to a technical issue on July 19 and rescheduled for the following night.
Out of the 300 passengers, only a portion were accommodated in hotels. Those with single-entry Schengen visas were unable to leave the airport and had to remain inside the terminal. With most airport facilities and restaurants closing at 11 PM, around 20 passengers were left with limited access to food and no proper place to rest.
Negin, an Iranian resident of Dubai traveling with her friend Sanaz, told Khaleej Times that the holiday ended with an unpleasant experience: “Our flight was scheduled for 10:15 PM. When we queued up for boarding, Emirates staff told us to wait as the flight was delayed. By 11 PM, the airport lights began to dim and everyone was confused. Shortly after, we were informed the flight was cancelled.”
She added: “Some of us couldn’t leave the airport due to our visa type. Emirates staff tried to help, but all accommodation inside the airport was full. Around 2 AM, we were given temporary beds in a hallway, but by 7 AM we were asked to vacate the space for other guests.”
Negin claimed that an airport service officer told them to leave. With limited seating in the waiting area, some passengers were forced to stand for hours. Despite passengers’ hopes to use Emirates’ lounge, access was reportedly denied until 11:30 AM.
An Emirates spokesperson said: “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority.
