Dubai is set to open its first professional ice rink built to NHL standards this September in Dubai Sports City. With an investment of AED 20 million, this state-of-the-art winter sports facility aims to become a major hub for ice hockey, figure skating, and other winter sports in the region.
The Emirates Sports Arena spans 10,000 square meters and can host over 600 spectators. It will offer facilities for professional training, international tournaments, and public sessions. The indoor temperature will be maintained between 16 to 18°C to ensure optimal conditions for athletes.
Developed by the Emirates Sports Group—also managing the nearby Emirates Sports Hotel—the project has been three years in the making. According to CEO Vladimir Bourdoun, who also chairs the UAE Ice Hockey League, this marks a significant milestone in the region’s push to promote winter sports.
Talks are underway with the UAE Winter Sports Federation to designate the venue as the national training center for UAE teams competing internationally. The grand opening will feature exhibition games with NHL players and international figure skating performances.
The Emirates Ice Rink will be open to the public as well, offering skate rentals, local dining options, regular leisure skating sessions, and dedicated spaces for female athletes and coaches to encourage women’s participation in winter sports.
Supported by organizations such as the Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Tourism, Dubai Sports City, and Coca-Cola Arena, the project aims to become one of Dubai’s key sports destinations.
