WeRide has announced the launch of its first fully driverless robotaxi trial in Abu Dhabi—marking the first deployment of its kind in the Middle East.
This new phase expands the robotaxi service area to Al Maryah Island and Al Reem Island, adding to WeRide’s existing network, which has been operating safely since 2021 in Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes leading to Zayed International Airport.
Jennifer Li, CFO and Head of Global Development at WeRide, stated:
“WeRide is the first company to test fully driverless robotaxis in the Middle East. As we expand to high-demand areas, we’re bringing smart mobility solutions to more users across the region. These actions demonstrate the maturity of our technology and represent a key step toward large-scale commercialization.”
The UAE is a key market for WeRide. In July 2023, the company received the first and only national autonomous driving license in the UAE, authorizing testing and operation of self-driving vehicles on public roads across the country.
In December 2024, WeRide partnered with Uber to offer robotaxi booking services in Abu Dhabi—making it the largest commercial robotaxi service outside the US and China.
Fully driverless commercial rides and expanded service zones will be introduced starting summer 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
