On the third anniversary of the Houthi rebel attacks on the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has designated January 17 as the Day of Resilience and Unity. In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he reflected on the 2022 attacks, during which the Houthis targeted the civilian infrastructure of Mussafah ICAD 3 and a construction site at Abu Dhabi International Airport. These attacks resulted in the explosion of three oil tankers, killing three civilians and injuring six others.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed stated:
“January 17 is a day to remember the resilience and solidarity of the Emirati people. These values are an eternal source of pride and dignity that we collectively commit to passing on to future generations. May our nation always remain a beacon of unity and goodwill for humanity.”
Dubai Ruler Highlights the Day’s Significance
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, Vice President, and Prime Minister of the UAE, also emphasized the importance of this day. He wrote:
“On January 17, the sentiments of unity, loyalty, solidarity, and courage demonstrated by both Emirati citizens and residents will be remembered. Our enduring values of sacrifice, generosity, and commitment will continue to guide us and future generations.”
Study Highlights the Impact of Houthi Attacks
A recent study published by the Trends Research and Advisory Center examined the 2022 Houthi attacks on the UAE. Authored by Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, the study, titled “The Houthi Threat to Regional Security: Lessons Learned from the January 17 Events”, analyzed the multifaceted threats posed by the Houthis to regional security. It emphasized the importance of international cooperation, intelligence sharing, and raising youth awareness against extremist ideologies while promoting values of tolerance and moderation. The study also predicted that future terrorist threats would become more complex, requiring updated strategies.
This day serves as a reminder of the UAE’s resilience and determination to maintain security, stability, and prosperity for its people and the region.
